Always Lyrics

May joy come in the morning
May the sparrow sing of it all day
May peace float down like an autumn leaf
Gather in piles for children to play

May forgiveness be an open field
May this be the land that I trod
May my soul be ever restless
'Till I find my rest in God

May the afternoon flow slow like the river
Wading in pools, and washing my feet
May sleep be fitful and dreams delightful
In waking to You, may my spirit be sweet

May the windows be wide open
To let the breezes blow through
May that wind be the very spirit
That lifts my prayers to You

CHORUS:
May I always love You,
Always love You
May I always love You,
Always

May my faith remain a mystery
Something so real that I cannot touch
May patience be as strong as silence
Praying You'll give me, give me this much

Let trust be a wild beast
The lion beside which I'll lie down
And He comes to me gently
A broken king with a royal crown

CHORUS

May our weeping turn to fits of laughter
May His pleasure be the treasure we're after
May hope take root like a mighty oak,

Bracing itself in the snow
Knowing Spring will come
The promised Son
Warming the earth, and letting us grow

CHORUS

About this Song:
We grew up on a heritage of hymns, and they grounded us in vivid images of our faith. "Always" was an attempt to reach back to them with one hand while hanging on to the present with the other. The result was something like a prayer.

Broken Down Lyrics

I will come to You if You don't mind this mess
Cause I have brusehd up my act, but I'm still an
Orphan in rags trying to look her best

There's been talk all over town about the One who fixes the broken down

I will come to You if You don't mind my unfaithfulness
Cause I have put my hand to the plow, but my spirit was barely in it

There's been talk all in these parts about the One who warms the coldest hearts

I will come to You if You don't mind my sorrow
Cause I have planted rows and rows,
But my sweat and tears won't make 'em grow

They're even talkin' on the farms about the One who gathers us in His arms

He gathers us in His arms
So I will come to You if what they're sayin' is really true
Cause I have heard of blind that see, lame who walk, so can You mend me?

I will gather all my stuff and bring it to the feet of Jesus... Jesus
I will rise and go to Jesus--He won't mind my mess.

About this Song:
People ask us, "So you're from East Tennessee, do you have a refrigerator on your front porch?" We say, "Well, maybe." We've actually decided that it's a pretty smart idea put all your broken stuff out on the porch, and just maybe someone will come by and fix it. And maybe we shouldn't stop there but put the broken things in our heart out, so when the Healer comes through town, He'll know to stop by. When Jesus was here on earth, people went even further they carried the sick into the marketplaces or wherever He was. "And all who touched him were healed."

Emmanuel Lyrics

We have seen Your star rising in the East
We have watched that star crest over the horizon
We have waited for You to come... Emmanuel

We have heard the songs the angels have been singing
We have seen the gifts the wise have been bringing
We have wanted to join their song... Emmanuel

CHORUS:
And we are not alone anymore,
God's with us,
We are not alone...
Emmanuel,
God with us

We've been shaken from our sleep to hear of great joy
We have followed the shepherds to find You
We've discovered a baby boy.. Emmanuel

We have felt the hope in the air that You are breathing
We have seen the peace on Your face while You've been sleeping
We have wanted a pice of that hope... Emmanuel

CHORUS

About this Song:
Christmas is traditionally a time for us to enjoy all the gifts of family and friends. But maybe when Jesus came to earth, He was most excited about getting to the lonely, needy ones of us who have been waiting for something to change. "Emmanuel" means "God with us." We are not alone anymore.

Faithful One Lyrics

Oh, me of little faith, I can't make mountains move
But with each little step, I get closer to the truth
So I won't walk, I'll run, to the faithful One

CHORUS:
The faithful One who makes my soul believe
A firm and steady rock, where I lean
When I'm falling down, I'm holding on, to the faithful One

When the brightest day I sswallowed by night
I'll keep moving in faith cause I can't by sight
With the rise of the sun, comes the faithful One

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
As sure as the seasons change, You stay the same
As sure as things fall away, You will remain 'cause You say

CHORUS

To the faithful One who makes my soul believe
A firm and steady rock where I lean when I'm falling down
I'm holding on to the faithful One.

About this Song:
As the last song written for the album, The Faithful One came as an answer to all of the transition and change in our lives. We're so forgetful and fickle that it's a good thing we're relying on His faithfulness and not our own.

Hike To Maine Lyrics

Gonna hike up to Maine
Along the spine of the Appalachians
Gonna end up where the snow meets the sea
The snow is beckoning me

No measure of water could quench this fire
No mountain will get in my way
I'm gonna hike to Maine

Gonna live my life like everyday is the trail
Gonna prance along the ridges
And wait out the storms in the shelter cause I know
There's gonna be rough weather

No measure of rain will dry up my heart
No cloud will make me stay
I'm gonna hike to Maine

CHORUS:
We're singing yeah
One step at a time

Gonna plant my feet forward
And vow not to ever look back with regret
Cause there is nothing that I can't do
Looking up and beyond myself
The weight of failure won't weight down my pack
I'll just take what I learn on the way
I'm gonna hike to Maine

BRIDGE:
When my tired bones need to stop and sit
I will rest my weary head on my walking stick

This trial is not made of dreams I will never taste
Life is so sweet
I ate a bunch of berries while I walked today
Tonight the stars will be my tent
The sun will call me to wake
I'm gonna hike to Maine

CHORUS

About this Song:
We live four miles from the Appalachian Trail, which is a footpath that extends from Georgia to Maine and crosses our road at Iron Mountain Gap. When we're home, we spend lots of time on a small section of it, running, hiking, and walking the dog. But some people hike the entire trail in a few months --seems pretty impossible, but then, life does too, sometimes.

I Will Walk Lyrics

Crumpled papers on the floor
Failed attempts to put, in words
How I'm so grateful
For what You've done for me
There is nothing I can give
If there is nothing that You need
I come before You
With all You ask of me

CHORUS:
I will walk, I will walk, I will walk
Humbly next to You

There are countless promises,
I have never followed through
All You require
Is all that I can do

CHORUS

About this Song:
Micah asks, "With what shall I come before the Lord. . .burnt offerings? A thousand rams? My firstborn? The fruit of my body?" To this day, we complicate our faith with all kinds of trendy works. "What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."

Indian Creek Lyrics

There's snow on the mountain today
I just can't get high enough to feel it
Cause there ain't no straight path up to You
So You stoop down in this valley
You swim along with the stream
I'll dip my hands in the water
And feel them come clean

I'll hold my arms wide open to the One who really lets me in
I'll hold my arms wide open to Him

CHORUS:
You'll find me past the south fork of Indian Creek
I'm trying to hide in these hills and let Him get to me
The silence here is so loud I can hear Him speak
Like a mist on this mountain He settles down,
And my soul is lost in getting found

I saw the stars tonight for the first time in weeks
Black velvet with a million diamonds all laid out for me
It's not like they haven't been shining, it's just that I didn't see
Till I caught the crooket road up and saw their reflection in the creek

I feel what light is all about when it cuts through my dark
I feel what light is all about when I hand Him my heart

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
In the summer, the thunder echoes, back and forth
The trees shake and bend in the storm
Just like me in Your mercy, just like me

CHORUS(3x)

About this Song:
Indian Creek runs in front of our cabin, and we go fishing there often, though we never seem to catch anything, which is a good thing because we wouldn't know what to do with what we caught anyway. But somehow, in that still, quiet place, God catches us, and opens our eyes to see Him all around us.

My Family Lyrics

I know we need each other like the trees need the rain
Our Father brought us together to love in His name

CHORUS:
I will thank my God every time I remember you
I will praise Him constantly for my brothers, my sisters, my family
You're my brothers, my sisters, my family

I know your love has shaped me like water in a gorge
My Maker knew what I'd need and He gave me much more

CHORUS

Somehow your smile sustains me like the blood in my veins
Your hands soften the blow of my private pain
Somehow we can be foriven like the turn of a leaf
His strength is made perfect when our spirits are weak

CHORUS

About this Song:
Mandee wrote "My Family" last summer for a group of high school students who took us in, cared for us, and fed us when we felt like, "the least of these. . ." We're so thankful for the amazing support system that the Father provides us in the strangers that become our long, lost friends and in our friends that become our family and in our families that continues to make us rich in their love for us.

Runaway Heart Lyrics

Sin is creepin' like a snake in her direction
It's the little things he says that carry her far away
Now she aches for a friend that's familiar
Her feet hurt cause they walked her into this place
But most of the time, she feels nothing inside

CHORUS:
She is my runaway heart, and we're both lonesome for home
It didn't happen all at once
But the wandering took me real slow
Real slow

She's not quite sure where her next meal will come from
She scrambles and she scrapes, and what is not hers she takes
Living just to survive is killing her inside

CHORUS

So she's a missing person who wants to be caught
Life on her own is not like she thought
If you left the 99
She wouldn't be hard to find
So rescue this runaway

CHORUS

About this Song:
I think that most of us who grew up in church have no trouble seeing the splinters in everyone else's eyes, but we don't know what to do with the log in our own, or even how it got there. This song is not about forsaking God in a single, big mistake, but about the series of small decisions, like choosing not to love our brother, that lead us away from the heart of God. Compassion comes when we realize that our wandering hearts are all the same, and they all need to find their way home.

Smiled On Me Lyrics

What cut straight through my blinds was
Light, light to live by
Open my eyes, and my oh my
This day is gonna be good
Not gonna fuss about fashion
Not fret about time
Open my door, and thank the Lord
This day is gonna be good

Life has smiled on me
Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'
Callin' my name out loud
Life has smiled on me
Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'
Hey, yeah...

Tan faces, pick-up trucks
Smiles break free and our eyes light up
Climb on in and sit on back
This ride is gonna be good
Who knows what this day holds
Barefeet or sandles?
I vow to live it, minute by minute
This life is gonna be good

God has smiled on me
Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'
Callin' my name out loud
God has smiled on me
Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'
Hey, yeah...

Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'

BRIDGE:
Hey friend, laugh away
Yesterday while today's today
Hold on to beauty in everything
Share all that's good

Love has smiled on me
Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'
Callin' my name out loud
Love has smiled on me
Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'
Hey, yeah...

What cuts straight through my world is God who is love and good...
Hey friend, laugh away
Yesterday while today's today
Hold on to beauty in everything
Share all that's good

Happy trails are callin'
Callin' my name out loud
Love has smiled on me
Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'
Hey, yeah...

What cuts straight through my world is God who is love and good...

About this Song:
Most of our time is spent traveling around in our Dodge Ram Diesel pick-up truck. We wrote this song with our friend and producer, Michael Aukofer as a celebration of this life that we get to live on the road, and we used the bits of wisdom we learned from people (and a parrot) that we've met along the way.
